The purpose of the TOEFL test is to evaluate proficiency in English writing and reading of people whose native language is not English. TOEFL scores are required for purposes of admission by more than 4,400 two-and-four-year colleges and universities in the worldwide. In addition,government agencies, scholarship programs and licensing/certification agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency.
The test is offered in two formats: computer-based and paper-based. The computer-based test is offered in most parts of the world. In areas where access to the computer-based test is limited the paper-based version of the test is administered.
